The Story of Sky Cocker

A long time ago, in 1975, we were first contacted by the Jehovah's Witnesses.  My wife was a Registered Nurse and I was a seaman.  We lived on a small island with a small population, and life was good.  We had no idea, nor had we heard anything about the prophecies of that very year, in which Armageddon was supposed to occur, which false prophecies had been made by their Governing Body.  We only heard of the wonderful future of peace and security by Jesus.  This was quickly replaced by Jehovah in the Watchtower Society's publication, "The Truth That Leads to Everlasting Life," a small blue book then used by the Jehovah's Witnesses to tempt us further in our studies, the "carrot" dangled in front of us to keep us focused on their agenda.

Not having any knowledge of the bible, we enjoyed seeing the elderly couple who came to our door and we would talk of gardening and any other topic, because we were not interested at all in religious matters at that time.  We were having too much fun raising our children, and we were young.   We were, however, curious about the bible and we asked for one.  That opened the door to a free bible study, so why not?

Years later, we were baptized in 1984.  Our congregation of sometimes twenty people were close friends and it didn't take long before I was appointed as a Ministerial Servant.

Back then, land and homes were cheap on the island, so many more people from the mainland came and with them other Jehovah's Witnesses, all bringing their own problems with them.  One elder whom I detest was among them.  He viewed the pictures we had on the wall and windows, from which to view the outside, as distracting to his authority.

The Watchtower Society was also becoming much more authoritative and demanding of our time.  Since we had grown to more than forty publishers, I was asked to consider taking on the position of an elder, only I had just begun having doubts about it all.  I stopped taking parts in the meetings and withdrew.  This caused problems at home and, as a result, my wife and I divorced.  I continued to attend some of the meetings, even though I was treated as an outcast.  Still, I thought of myself as a Jehovah's Witness, believing that it really was the truth and that I just needed time to reconsider.

Some twenty years later, in 2013, I wanted to reconnect with the Jehovah's Witnesses. The meeting was short and sweet, lasting less than five minutes.  I was disfellowshipped.  I now consider it to be a blessing, because I am born again and will not step inside any church.  It is now my quest to reunite with my family that is still enslaved within the Watchtower Society.
