Ty Robinson's Story

Hi.  I'm Ty.  I was born into the Watchtower Society and raised as a Jehovah's Witness.  My mother was a member, but my father didn't join until later.  I grew up, not being allowed to play with my neighbors' children, nor was I allowed to make friends at school.  Of course, I did, but had to hide it.  I pioneered and held service meetings at age fourteen, because I was the only male in our congregation.  I was encouraged to drop out of school for the full time ministry.

I also liked girls....a lot.....which caused me to have five Judicial Committee meetings in the feared "back room," by the time I was sixteen years old.  Apparently, elders take it seriously, when it's their daughter.  It was a life of fear.  I learned to lead a double, even triple life.  I was good at it.....well, maybe not, since I did have so many of those Judicial Committee meetings.  I tried.  I pretended, hoping one day that Jehovah would come talk to me.  Then, soon after I turned age eighteen, another Judicial Committee meeting was scheduled for me.  I just said, "F__k this.  This isn't right."  I had been having doubts for years.

My older brother was disfellowshipped and I was never satisfied with the way he was being treated.  I set up meeting after meeting with the elders, but I never showed up.  They would call me and I would say, "I'm on my way."  Ha-ha.  I'm a dick.

I tried to continue my relationship with my parents, sister and younger brother.  We had plenty of contentious battles, blaming each other.  We used to talk once or twice a year.  They came to visit when I had my daughter five years ago, but everything sort of came to a head for me last year.  When my older brother was in town, at the time, I invited my parents to dinner, but they said that they couldn't come, because my older brother would be there and he was disfellowshipped.  I lost my cool and just told them what I thought about it, that, no, they don't get to be a part of my life, until they admit shunning is wrong and cruel.  That's really all it would take.  I miss them and wish they could spend this life with me.  Back to earlier... my father was baptized the same month I left.  F__king Irony.
