The Story of Abby Marie Koch & The Toe Ring

Hello, everyone.  I'm Abby.  I was born into the Watchtower Society and raised as a Jehovah's Witness.  I was disfellowshipped when I was 18.  I am now 25.

The reason I left is because I was bullied by a woman, who was an elder's wife and a regular pioneer (working full time in field service) over me wearing a toe ring!  She said that it was wrong to wear it and I needed to stop wearing the toe ring, because I was becoming a auxiliary pioneer (part time field service).  I began to take it off when I went out in field service with her.

One day, I was running late and forgot to take the toe ring off.  I spent half the day working house-to-house with the elder's wife.  After we went on break, she noticed it and proceeded to criticize me about it as we were driving down the road.  She began screaming at me and telling me that I was a rebel and that I was never going to be anything better.  Her severe criticism crushed me.  It was a harsh blow to my self-esteem.

That's when I actually started to rebel against my parents.  My step-father was an elder and his position in the congregation made it that much worse for me, because I don't care what anyone says, if you're an elder's child, you are expected to have higher standards than other children.  I was publicly reproved (Public announcement made in front of congregation that offender has engaged in conduct unbecoming to a Christian) and that shaming announcement devastated me, because my mother has bad medical problems.  We sat on the back row and everyone turned around to glare at me.  I will never forget the look on their faces.  They judged me!  After that, I left and went to live with my natural father, who's not a Jehovah's Witness.  I began to see the world in a whole new light and it was awesome.  A year later, I was disfellowshipped.  Everyone I had known for my whole life, including my mother, stopped talking to me.  It was difficult, but I am happy to not be there anymore.  Thank you for letting me add my voice to the other survivors and tell my story, because not very many people truly understand what it's like to be part of the Watchtower Society as a Jehovah's Witness.
